Louisville Police Department Responds to Community Concerns with Enhanced Traffic Safety Initiative

The Louisville Police Department is taking action after hearing ongoing concerns from community members about traffic safety across the city. In response, the department is launching a comprehensive traffic safety education and enforcement campaign aimed at making Louisville’s roadways safer for everyone.

Through newly secured grant funding for participation in the Click it or Ticket and High Visibility Enforcement programs, through the Colorado Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Transportation, officers will conduct high-visibility traffic enforcement efforts from April 6, 2026 through September 30, 2026. These efforts are designed not only to address violations but to educate the public and encourage long-term behavior change.

The campaign will focus on the most common factors contributing to traffic violations, including:

  • Seat belt compliance
  • Speeding
  • Accident-causing behaviors (such as following too closely and careless driving)
  • Unregistered and uninsured vehicles
  • E-bike and bicycle violations

Officers will be increasing their presence in areas where violations and crashes are most frequently reported, and reinforcing safe driving habits and addressing behaviors that put others at risk throughout the City of Louisville.

This initiative is about listening to our community and taking meaningful action. We know traffic safety is a top concern, and we are committed to addressing it through both education and enforcement.

In addition to the current campaign, the Louisville Police Department is working toward long-term solutions. Plans are underway to establish a dedicated Traffic Safety Team, as well as introduce motorcycle officers to enhance enforcement capabilities and visibility throughout the community.

Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. Whether driving a vehicle, riding an e-bike/bicycle, or  as a pedestrian, community members are encouraged to:

  • Obey all traffic laws and signals
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions
  • Maintain safe speeds and following distances
  • Wear seat belts and proper safety gear
  • Share the road respectfully with others

The goals of the enhanced traffic safety initiative are to promote community education and enforcement to build safer habits that extend well beyond the campaign period.  The long-term focus is to create a culture of safety that protects everyone who travels in and through our community.
